Why do you do this? What advantage does it add to your photos?

I sharpen and/or defog every single photo that leaves my office. They look much sharper, and that is a look I am always trying to achieve. Here are before and afters. The after picture has been defogged, and sharpened at 45% opacity! These were the only changes made to the picture. It's almost like they are more 3D.
